Drop Table Adjustments

A drop table is a unique table used by chiropractors where segments of the table can be raised and dropped. The segments or pieces of the table are often split into different segments of the body (hips, low back and mid/upper back). These pieces raise around 10-30mm and require a specific force to push them back down. The tension on these pieces are controlled by the chiropractor, meaning they can control the force required to get the table to drop.

The point of these tables are to allow a more gentle but still effective force to be applied through a joint compared to a regular adjustment. The table takes away some of the force of the adjustment, but the same direction and speed can still be applied through the joint.

How Does it Work?

As preluded to above, the adjustment aims to open up a joint capsule, releasing pressure and thus improving its ability to move. This then allows the joint to increase it’s range of mobility. However, it is not just about adjusting a sore spot and it getting better. An assessment is performed in order to address areas of poor functioning throughout the spine and identify what tissues are being overloaded or overused as a result. With a combination of manual mobilizations and soft tissue release modalities, our team at 4 Life Chiropractic will aim to improve whole spinal and bodily function to help relieve or prevent injury.

When is is Used?

Drop piece tables are utilized regularly with chiropractic treatment. They are a great way of improving mobility through the hips and pelvis. The drop piece can be used for different segments depending on the patients preference and history. For people with sensitivity to firm touch, they allow the chiropractor to perform an adjustment without a great deal of impact to the area. They are ideal for adjusting smaller joints such as the costotransverse joints (rib attaching to mid back). They may also be used for patients with osteoporosis, where only a mild force can be applied.

Drop piece is a safe and effective way of treating:

  • Low and mid back pain

  • Postural deficiencies

  • Immobility issues

  • Rib pain

  • Pelvic pain
