Lumbar Flexion Distraction

Flexion distraction involves the opening of the disc spaces in the spine by applying a gently stretch through the body. Here at 4 Life Chiropractic, we have a specialised table that moves to effectively and safely traction the mid and lower back. The table is adjustable for all body types and involves strapping the body down, to anchor the mid back and legs to the table. The table then pivots at your hips, gently pulling your legs down and away from the rest of the body. You are slowly eased into this position over the space of a few minutes, with the severity and type of issue dictating how long you need on the table. The stretching force on your spine may initially be tender, but as the tissue relaxes, it often provides instant relief for people suffering acute disc related low back pain.

Lower Back Soreness

How Does it Work?

The direction of the force/pull through the spine causes the disc spaces in between each vertebra to open up. People suffering acute low back disc pain or bulges will benefit from this technique as it alleviates the pressure throughout these joints.

It can also help with:

  • Reduce pressure on exiting nerve roots

  • Improve mobility of spinal segments

  • Reduce inflammation in spinal joints and nerves (often seen after multiple visits)

Lumbar Flexion Distraction

When is is Used?

Flexion distraction is often the first line of treatment for people with acute (sudden) low back disc pain. It can offer quick relief of symptoms and kick starts the anti-inflammatory process.  Some conditions where flexion distraction may be used for are:

  • Lumbar disc injuries (bulges, herniations or degeneration)

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Low back pain

  • Sciatica

  • Lumbar stiffness and immobility

  • Sports injuries
