Pelvic & Sacral Pain

Pelvic and sacroiliac joint (SIJ) based pain is often misdiagnosed and undertreated. This type of pain often presents as a lower back and upper gluteal (buttock) ache that can become sharp with movements such as rolling over in bed and getting up from a chair. The pain can also wrap around into the sides and front of the hip, which can mimic lower back injuries and hip pain.

What Causes Pelvic & Sacroiliac Pain?

Chiropractor easing pelvic, sacral and hip

The most common cause we see at 4 Life Chiropractic is repetitive strain because of poor lumbar and pelvis functioning. Due to the demands placed on our body with work and day-to-day living, we become tight and develop habits that place certain parts of our spine under more pressure than others. Commonly seen in people who sit down for long periods at work or home, our hip flexors and low back muscles become tight; which ultimately pull the pelvis forward. Because of this, more pressure is placed at the bottom of the spine and where it attaches to the pelvis (SIJ). Over time this pressure can lead to degeneration and build up of inflammation.

Another cause of pelvic pain is pregnancy. Throughout pregnancy, the spine and pelvis change the way they function to accommodate for a baby's growth. This often places the ligaments throughout the lumbopelvic region under a great deal of stress. A hormone called relaxin is also produced early on in the pregnancy to help prepare the pelvis for labour. Although a normal part of pregnancy, relaxin reduces the stability of the lumbopelvic ligaments and thus greater pressure is placed on the surrounding joints and muscles
