Postural Pain
Poor postural habits are seen in an estimated 80% of all people. Posture refers to the position of your body when either standing, sitting or laying down. Being straight doesn’t mean your posture is perfect, instead the ideal posture is the position you can put your body in with the least stress on your spine, joints and muscles. Postural pain is often the result of overloading either your spine or the muscles around it. Postural pain is normally felt as a dull, deep ache and discomfort that slowly builds when in one position for too long. It is often hard to avoid postural pain, as the demands of work and life require you to sit, bend or stand for a prolonged period. However, postural pain can be addressed and relieved with the right treatment and lifestyle/ergonomic changes.

What Causes Postural Pain?
The leading cause of postural pain is the overuse and fatigue of the muscles through your neck, shoulders, and lower back as they work to take the pressure off your spine. Quite often people sit for work, which places a greater amount of pressure through the joints in the back. As a result, we begin to shift, lean and curve in order to take this pressure off. You end up slouched, hunched and constantly moving to get comfortable. As this pressure builds throughout the day, the muscles around these joints are working overtime in order to prevent the joints from becoming inflamed. Sometimes this can lead to muscle spasms and feeling ‘locked up’ as soon as you go to move. Here on the 4 Life Chiro website we have a great blog that provides information on Upper Cross Syndrome, which is the postural habit of being hunched and your head sitting forward.
OUR APPROACH
Chiropractic for Postural Pain
The general theme with postural pain is the sooner you address your posture; the quicker and easier results can be achieved. The approach we take here at 4 Life Chiropractic is to not only provide you with the appropriate treatment, but also the right tools and changes to make sure you have long lasting relief from postural pain. In office treatment is focused around trying to improve spinal mobility and reducing muscle tension. This not only offers relief from symptoms, but also allows you to then strengthen your body to have the required support and stability to perform any tasks required. We understand that you are unable to change the role of your job or duties at home, therefore we look to provide you with some subtle and easy changes that help reduce the load you put through your spine on a daily basis. It may not mean that all of a sudden you sit up straight and tall, but it will give you the confidence and peace of mind that you can go about your day to day activities without fear of pain and injury.
