Sciatica
4 Life Chiropractors regularly deal with sciatica and have great results with getting rid of the debilitating pain it can cause. Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the sciatic nerve. This large branch of nerves begins in the lower back and travels through the buttocks, into the back of the leg and extends past the knee into the calf and foot. Pain levels and type can vary, however most people will feel a sharp, burning or electric shock sensation throughout those areas. It is also common to have altered sensitivity and reduced strength throughout the hip and leg.

What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica is caused by the compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Most commonly the nerve is pinched in the lower back, because of a disc bulge or prolapse. It can also be a result of tight buttock muscles (piriformis) or spinal arthritis and osteoporosis. Often seen in people who regularly lift heavy things, spend long periods seated or have suffered from a fall or motor vehicle accident. It is also prevalent throughout pregnancy due to the constant changes throughout the hips and pelvis.
OUR APPROACH
Chiropractic for Sciatica
Early treatment is the most effective way to get rid of sciatic pain - meaning "don't leave it too long before seeing a Chiropractor". Depending on the cause, sciatica can last months if untreated.
At 4 Life Chiropractic, we can identify where the sciatic nerve is being impinged, either through orthopedic and neurological testing or referring for medical imaging. A range of treatments and exercises can be administered, including lumbar decompression, spinal mobilizations, soft tissue release and more. A treatment program will be created, including take-home exercises and lifestyle/workplace modifications to prevent further flare-ups.
